What do we do?
Activities and Interests of VTSFFC
We like to do things. Lots of things. We usually discuss upcoming events at our weekly meetings, which are held on Thursdays starting at 7:30 PM at Randolph 209. The events we hold usually include the following:
While it's generally a given that the preceding list of events will happen, it is by no means an exhaustive list. Anyone is free to suggest events for VTSFFC to do at our weekly meetings or on our mailing list. All reasonable suggestions shall be considered. Who knows, you could start a New VTSFFC Tradition, so come by the meetings and speak your mind!
- Student Organization Showcase -- It's not really our event, but for a freshman at VT, this is usually the first opportunity to meet us. It's a big sort of exposition on the first Friday of the Fall semester where all the student organizations come together and tell you why you should join their group. We usually end up in the back, next to the Rocky Horror fan club. But we're not daunted -- we call attention to ourselves. ;-)
- New Member Picnic -- This happens usually on the second weekend of the Fall semester. It's a picnic, for new members! We have burgers, hot dogs, and other cookout staples. We keep the grill running all day while shooting the breeze and playing with the outdoor toys people bring. Bringing a chair (and your own outdoor toys) is highly encouraged.
- Invisifest -- We hold this event sometime in the first half of the Fall semester. We take over an entire floor of an academic building (usually McBryde Hall, but we've been elsewhere in the past) and turn it into a one-day, all-day miniature science fiction convention. We show sci-fi movies, put together a big video gaming room, play pen-and-paper role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, munch on snacks, and generally hang out. In addition, Spiel, our spinoff gaming club, holds their monthly Game Day there. All of this is completely free and open to the public.
- Halloween Party -- We hold this party on the weekend closest to Halloween. Basically, it's a party where people get together -- some in costume, some not -- to dance, game, and socialize. People are free to bring their favorite snacks and drinks, but it is by no means required.
- Thanksgiving Dinner -- This is where we all get together and eat Thanksgiving-related foods. Last year, we went to The Homeplace, which is a really good, all-you-can-eat family style restaurant near Roanoke.
- Winter Holiday/Exam Party -- This is a more laid back, relaxing party that we hold during Exam Week. We usually end up watching movies, kicking back, and socializing. We hold it off-campus, since we can't hold events on campus during Exam Week.
- Technicon -- We usually don't have any other major events in the Spring semester before this. This is our biggest event of the year, a weekend-long sci-fi and fantasy convention held in a hotel in Blacksburg. We bring in guests from all over the country -- the guests we've had over the two-and-a-half decades we've put on the convention include Lois McMaster Bujold, Steven Brust, and Pete Abrams. It does cost money to attend this event, but we have discounts for students and those who volunteer their time and become staff. Even without the discounts, it's well worth it.
- End-of-Year Party -- A party at the end of Spring semester, during Exam Week. Much like the Holiday Party, only warmer (most of the time).
- Outdoor Activities -- People that are more outdoors-inclined sometimes attend our weekend outdoor excursions in the Summer. The general vicinity of Blacksburg has a great number of places to hike, and we also do things like tubing. Beyond October, it's usually too cold to do much outdoors.
